Substitute Masterpiece Zone Lessons

Every year I begin my classes with a Substitute Masterpiece Zone Lesson. This is an art lesson that I begin with the students on the first day and then tuck it away. The only time the lesson is pulled out is when there is a substitute teacher. I have had a lot of positive feedback on this idea.

My substitute teachers love it because they already know what they will be teaching when they come in to sub for me. They also know that they will not have to search for different supplies for each grade. The students love it, because they know it is a special assignment that they only get to work on with a substitute teacher. It also gives them a break from the project we are currently working on.

Lesson Ideas:
My Wild Socks
4 Class Periods

Day 1: Have students trace the profile of their shoe. Add a leg. (I did this step with my students).

Day 2: Create a horizon line in the composition.

Add details to the shoe (look at shoe for reference). If students are not wearing the same shoe, they should examine the shoe they are wearing and think about the details they could add on their drawing: laces, patterns, straps, mesh, logos, stitching, etc.

Outline drawing with sharpie marker.

Color shoe with colored pencils.

Day 3: Discuss different types of line. Add crazy patterns and designs to sock.

Day 4: Color sock with markers.

Zentangle Pattern With Tissue Hearts
1 to 2 Class Periods

Day 1-2:

1. Have students create a border around a 9 x 12 inch piece of paper using a ruler.

2.  Have students divide up the space with in the border area.  I would recommend drawing 5 to 6 lines.

3.  Have students fill in each space with a pattern or zentangle design.  This lesson could be extended with a class period of zentangle practice.  I had them use a sharpie marker.

4.  After designs are in place, have students cut out 3 to 4 hearts out of tissue paper. Glue them over pattern designs.  To make heart pop out a bit more have students outline heart with a sharpie marker.

5.  Color the border of composition.

    1. For the younger students I let them trace the profilend of their actual shoe.

  4. Starting this lesson and tucking it away is a great idea if you never have students that withdraw and never have any new students.

    1. I usually don't have too much of a problem with new students starting this lesson on the fly. I have extra paper in storage for the sub to pull out if needed and with the lesson plan all typed up a substitute teacher can pretty easily get a new student quickly caught up.

As far as students who withdraw, if I am given enough notice I usually pull it for them to take with and if I don't receive any notice I usually save their work for examples for future classes.

Students coming and going is a hard battle whether it be a sub zone lesson or our regular planned lesson.
