Mini Murals Summer School Project

With permission from my principal I gave my third and fourth grade students a mini mural project for summer school. The task was to decorate my art room cupboards with reproductions of famous masterpieces that we study throughout the school year.

The sessions were 40 minutes each day and lasted for one week.  I divided students in groups of two or three to learn about a famous artist and their masterpiece.  Students spent one class period doing research and the rest working on their reproduction.  On the last day of class students shared their painting and the information they learned about the original artist and painting to their classmates.

Student painting The Scream.

The Green Stripe original artist Henri Matisse.

The Flower Vendor by Diego Rivera.

Fifteen Sunflowers in a Vase by Vincent van Gogh.

The Dream by Pablo Picasso.

The Scream by Edvard Munch.

Young Corn by Grant Wood.

Needless to say, I am quite pleased with the incredible job my students accomplished in such a short time and anxious for the school year to begin, once again, so I can see the reactions of students, parents and staff.  Most of all I can't wait to enjoy my newly decorated room!
