Crazy Busy Art Room Art Prompt 11

One of my favorite things about teaching art to my elementary students is talking about art history. I have discovered that my students just love learning facts about artists and the paintings they created.
Today we are going to briefly discuss artist Andy Warhol. He was an American artist born in Pittsburg, PA in 1928. He is considered a POP artist. He takes everyday objects and creates art inspired by these objects to make us see them in new way. One of his most recognizable works of art is his Campbell's Soup Cans.

The first flavor of soup introduced by Campbell's was introduced in 1897, it was tomato soup. By 1962, when Warhol painted his Campbell's Soup Cans there were 32 flavors. How many cans of soup did Warhol paint in his painting? This piece is estimated to be worth $11.7 million dollars!

A little fun fact: Andy Warhol use to eat soup every day for lunch nearly 20 years! No wonder he was able to paint the details on the cans so accurately!

Andy passed away in 1987. He was 59 years old.

Today we are going to be created a drawing a canned good found in your cupboard or pantry. We will be practicing our drawing and looking skills today.
Supplies: paper, pencil, eraser, markers or crayons, and a canned food item
Step 1: Draw an ellipse shape near the top of your paper. An ellipse looks like a flatten oval.
Step 2: Draw 2 vertical lines coming down from the edges of the ellipse.
Step 3: Connect the vertical lines with a curve line to create the bottom of your can.
Step 4: Observe the can you will creating. Draw what you see. It is so important to look at the details. Take your time doing this step!
Step 5: Color your artwork using a medium of your choice. Markers, crayons or paints.
