Crazy Busy Art Room Art Prompt 36

This art prompt is a special request from Chloey who wanted to learn how to draw an elephant.  I hope you will be happy with what I came up with today.

Elephants are considered sacred animals in India.  In fact, every March in Jaipur City, India a huge party takes place called the Elephant Festival.  Elephants are given head to toe makeovers.  They are painted in beautiful, bright colors, draped with jewelry and patterned cloths and even given pedicures!  A prize is given to the most beautifully decorated elephant.

The people celebrate with dancing and music.  There is an elephant parade and games played with the elephants that include polo and tug-of-war.  The strongest elephant goes on to compete in a tug-of-war against 10 people.

I don't know about you, but after hearing all this, I want to visit India during the Elephant Festival to see all of this for myself.

Supplies Needed:  paper, pencil, eraser, medium of your choice (markers, crayons, paints)

I have posted photos of all the steps, but please read through the directions for additional instruction or creative choices.

Step 1:  Start with a slight arc near the top center of your paper.  This will be the elephant's back.

Step 2:  Draw a large letter "C" at one end of the arc to create the ear.

Step 3:  Draw a line that hooks from the top corner o the ear.  Have it descent to the bottom of your paper.

Step 4:  Draw a line that starts near the bottom of the ear and angles towards the trunk.

Step 5:  Draw the line down to create the trunk.  Connect the lines to create the bottom of the elephant's nose.

Step 6:  Draw a curve line to create the nearside of the elephant.

Step 7:  Extend the line diagonally until you reach the bottom of your paper.  This should be parallel to the  bottom of the trunk.

Step 8:  Draw a horizontal line to create the bottom of the foot.

Step 9:  Draw the line back up to create the leg.

Step 10:  Add a diagonal line to begin the second rear leg.

Step 11:  Add a horizontal line for the bottom of the foot and a diagonal line to form the rest of the leg.

Step 12:  Draw a small curve line starting at the bottom of the ear.

Step 13:  From the bottom of the curved line, add a vertical line to begin the front leg.

Step 14:  Draw a horizontal line to form the bottom of the foot.  Then add a vertical line to give the leg width.

Step 15:  Add a curve line to make his belly.  Notice how this attaches to the rear and front leg.

Step 16:  Add a diagonal line to create the second front leg.

Step 17:  Draw a horizontal line to create the bottom of the foot.

Step 18:  Extend the curve line under his ear to make the tusk.

Step 19:  Make a small line coming from the tusk.  Leave a tiny bit of space between the line and the ear.

Step 20:  Now draw a curve line to create the sharp tusk.

Step 21:  Erase the 2 lines in the tusk and the one line connecting the tusk to the ear.

Step 22:  Draw a small line from the tusk.  This will be the mouth.

Step 23:  Draw a curve line towards the body.

Step 24:  Add an eye and a triangle shape for the tip of the second tusk.

Step 25:  Add the tail.

Step 26:  Add a curved line to the elephant's back to create a blanket.

Step 27:  Decorate the blanket as you wish.

Step 28:  Add a horizon line.

Step 29:  Now it is time to get our elephant ready for the Festival!  Add designs to your elephant.  Be creative.  Remember if we were in the Elephant Festival, the most beautiful elephant would be given a prize.

Step 30:  Color your drawing using the medium of your choice (marker, crayons or paints).
