Crazy Busy Art Room Art Prompt 38

Good Morning Artists!  This art prompt is a special request from Addison who wanted to create a unicorn.  A unicorn is a creature that usually resembles a horse with a single horn on it's forehead.  The unicorn has been thought to have magical powers that deal with healing.  Although today, we think of a unicorn as make believe, ancient cultures wrote about the unicorn as if it were a real animal.  There are even drawings of these animals dating back to prehistoric time.  What do you believe?  Is it possible that unicorn's once roamed the earth like the dinosaurs???

A cave art painting of a unicorn found in the Lascaux caves in France.

Supplies Needed:  3 pieces of paper, pencil, eraser, watercolor paints, brushes, scissors, glue stick, black marker, and crayons

I have posted photos of each step, however, I do encourage you to read all the directions for additional instruction or creative choice options.

Step 1:  On a piece of paper trace your hand using a pencil.

Step 2:  Cut out the hand shape using a pair of scissors.

Step 3:  Take a second piece of paper.  The photograph will show you how to divide the paper into sections with your pencil.

*If you have construction paper at home, you may choose not to do steps 3-6.  I do not have construction paper at my house currently, so I am painting my paper to create the pieces I need.

Step 4:  Paint the box on the right green.  This will be the grass for our composition.

Step 5:  Paint the next box any color or colors you like.  This will be the mane and tail for your unicorn.  I chose to paint my paper a rainbow color.

Step 6:  Paint the smallest box yellow.  This will be for the horn.  Leave the last box white for the unicorn's head.

Step 7:  Cut the pieces apart once the paper is dry.

Step 8:  On a third piece of paper, glue the green paper to the bottom.  This will be the grass for our unicorn to stand on.  Set this off to the side.

Step 9:  Cut out an oval out of the white square.  If you feel it is a bit too big, keep cutting it smaller and smaller to get the right size.  Do this slowly, for you don't want to cut it too small.

Step 10:  Glue the oval onto the thumb of the hand.  Make sure the fingers are pointing down.

Step 11:  Using a black marker add details to the unicorn.  I drew lines to make hooves, eyes, a nose and a mouth.

Step 12:  Using your scissors and cut the bottom of the hooves so they are flat.

Step 13:  Take the paper you made for the mane and tail and cut it in half.

Step 14:  Set half of the painted paper on the horses rear.  Plan what you want the tail to look like using a black marker.

Step 15:  Once you have your plan figured out, cut out the tail and glue it in place.  I glued it under the rump area, not on top.

Step 16:  Take the second half of the painted paper and set it near the head of the unicorn.  Plan how you want the mane to look.

Step 17:  Cut and glue it in place.

Step 18:  Take a scrap of painted paper.  Set it on the forehead of the unicorn.  Plan out his front bang area of his mane.

Step 19:  You guessed it!  Cut it out and glue it in place.

Step 20:  Draw a horn on the yellow piece of paper.

Step 21:  Cut out the horn and glue it in the center of the forehead of the unicorn.

Step 22:  On a scrap of white paper, draw 2 ears for your unicorn.

Step 23:  Cut out the ears and glue them in place.  Make sure they are not too big, or else your unicorn may look like a rabbit!

Step 24:  Find that piece of paper that you glued the grass on.  Using crayons, color the sky any way you wish.  Is it night time?  Is there a sun shining or clouds?  Will you have a rainbow in your sky?

Step 25:  When your background in complete, glue your unicorn in place.
